Welcome to the first episode of In the Hotseat - a chance to get up close and personal with the VIP's behind the scenes.
First in the firing line is NGO designer (and our fave green haired Mancunian) - Holly. We've got the lowdown, from her celeb crush to her predictions for the upcoming season.
How long have you worked at NGO?
Since the beginning. I was part of the team of amazing ladies who put this brand together.
What does a day in the life of an NGO designer look like?
Coffee. So much coffee. And lots of mood board making and meetings, also getting artworks ready to be made for samples for future collections. We also design all web, mail and social content for NGO, no rest for the wicked.
Where do you find a lot of your inspiration?
Absolutely everywhere. We love going to Tokyo for street style and vintage. Lots of female artists, so much from Instagram- to be honest our followers are a massive inspiration for us, you girls know how to fucking rock a look. But it can be super random, old magazines and movies, pop culture or just whatever we think we want to see right now, what we think is missing from the high street. But please let us know what you want to see!
What do you predict the colour of next season to be?
Fluros are always a winner.
What can we expect from upcoming NGO collections?
Lots more co-ord jogger and tee sets! We’ve had such an amazing reaction from them in previous collections. We are also trying to extend our curve range as this is very important to us and we have had such amazing feedback. I don’t want to go into too much detail about designs but I’m sure you will love ;)
We love chatting all things books and films over on the NGO Zine, what are your favourites?
I’m reading Chernobyl prayer at the moment, which is a compilation of monologues from the people who’s lives were affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986. I recommend everybody to read it, it gives an honest account of people living in Pripyat and Belarus at the time. I’ve just come back from visiting the exclusion zone and it was such an overwhelming experience. Also if you haven’t watched the HBO series Chernobyl check it out, along with the podcast.
My fave film is Sword in The Stone - or any old school Disney really. Mad Madame Mim is my spirit animal.
What's your fave piece from the current collection and how would you style it?
I’m in love with the floral tattoo jogger and tee set- I’m a sucker for an oversized co-ord. I’d wear it with my new rocks (I would sleep in them if I could) sling on a bum bag and I’d be good to go!
What's your all-time fave graphic that you've designed?
The manifesto tee. When we started the brand we wanted to start a kind of revolution for the female slogan tee. We were sick of seeing french words and quite frankly shite slogans. We wanted to created an empowering manifesto that not only stood for the brand but also stood for everybody wearing it. I love what it stands for and I hope it’s empowered lots of women and started conversations. That’s what it’s all about
When you’re not designing super hot garms for NGO, what do you like doing?
I love Japanese food, beer, my Persian cat Icarus and the gym.
I have an unhealthy obsession with watching pekingese dog videos, they are the cutest.
I also love shopping online, putting loads of stuff into my basket then never checking out (anybody else do this or is it just me?) I love taking time out for myself, self care is super duper important, you can never have too many bubble baths.
