This year marks 25 years since Rachel Green got off the plane, abandoning Louis Vuitton and Paris for an emotionally challenged Ross Geller.

Thanks to E4’s noughties programming schedule, we’ve seen every episode approximately a thousand times over. Since Netflix added it to their bank of bingeworthy seasons, it’s become the ultimate hangover-curing weekend comfort watch.

Rachel Green has never been more relevant for the fashion world than she is today. So here are the top 5 cues to take from our favourite 90’s fashion icon:

PASTEL COLOURS

The one where Ross and Rachel… you know

Muted colours were everywhere in Friends. Especially the Neapolitan ice cream shades that have taken over designer’s mood boards lately. Rachel wore a super cute sports-luxe pale yellow roll neck - the confidence boost anyone needs before a first date, because it just looked that good.

It was hard to narrow it down to a few of our favourite pastel moments, but Max Mara and Celine SS20 are great places to start… along with NGO, of course.

EXPERT LAYERING

The one with the football

When it comes to layering, the trick is to make yourself think – could I be wearing any more clothes? If in doubt, always channel Chandler Bing.
Rachel Green brought the game when the gang played American football on Thanksgiving – and we’re not talking about the sport. It really is true that when it comes to athleisure, nobody does it better than Rachel. Casually turning up with layered tees, joggers and a baseball cap – we know who deserved that troll trophy in our eyes.

Off White’s SS20 Menswear collection confirmed that this look is here to stay.

SLIP DRESS

The one with the stoned guy

A Rachel Green style file wouldn’t be complete without dropping a slip dress into the mix. Monica, Phoebe and Rachel all loved a slip dress and gave us first-class styling lessons before we even knew it. Get AW ready with a long sleeve tee underneath and you’re instantly super chic without looking like you’ve even tried.

Self-Portrait’s Spring 2020 collection showed us that colour is key for switching up slip dresses for different seasons. Opt for darker colours this AW.

TARTAN PANTS

The one with the fake Monica

For future reference, a shrunken tee with tartan pants is now the only wardrobe choice for tap dancing. Rachel’s love for check print didn’t end here. Remember the oversized Knicks sweater she wore? That was paired with check pyjama pants… and the iconic Rachel Green cream sweater and mini skirt – you got it; the skirt was tartan.

Dior is the go-to when it comes to a tee and printed pant.

THE LBD

The one where Rachel finds out

When Rachel Green wears an LBD, it becomes so much more. What could have been a casual t-shirt dress became the chicest daytime look by throwing on a sheer midi overskirt. It was the best way to end season 1. Sure, we wanted more of Chandler’s jokes and to find out how long Ross and Julie last – but most of all, we wanted more fashion.

Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2019 collection sported a similar look to this one. It’s almost like Rachel actually worked for them and actually designed this piece…
